Asterix & Obelix heroes – A new game on the switch

asterix and obelix on switch

Do you like deck building games? If you do, or don’t know what those are, I will gladly tell you more in this blog. I do enjoy a deck-builder every now and then and was glad to try this one out. Asterix and Obelix are quite famous for their comics and tv shows. Have you seen these? I sure have!

About Asterix and Obelix heroes

The year is 50 BC. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well, not entirely… One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders.

In this game, designed to delight both fans of deck building and of the Asterix series, you can build a deck of 30 cards from the 150 available in the game.

Each card in your deck can be used to advance your strategy, from inflicting heavy damage with a menhir to healing a hero with one of Getafix’s potions! It’s up to you to adapt to each round, make the right choices and create combos that are as unexpected as they are devastating, by mixing, for example, the famous frenemies Unhygienix and Fulliautomatix.

Playable on PC, switch, xbox, ps4 and ps5

Building your decks

I got asked if this game is for me. Since I like deck-builders and was looking for more games to play on my switch I gave Asterix & Obelix a try. In deck builders you mostly start with a small deck of cards. These are basic and low value. In the case of Asterix and Obelix, you start with lots of starter decks, since you are playing with a team. Each turn for your side, you draw cards and choose which ones to play. Throughout the game you get the change to upgrade cards, get new ones and delete cards from your deck. Combine tactfully to get the most out of your deck.

In this genre, Asterix and Obelix is a quite strong game mechanically. Although in my opinion I it took a long time to really upgrade the decks. You do unlock new characters for your team pretty easily and there are loads of them to find. You also have to play certain areas again later to come back for extra unlocks which I really liked. This gives a bit of a metroid vibe and most games lack this type of replay value.

Further into the game

During the game you can unlock a total of 24 different characters. Each has its own unique play-style and ultimate skill. You can min-max your party against your current foe to optimize your chances. All in all I like the game-play, albeit sometimes a bit slow for my pace. The artstyle fits my memory of Asterix & Obelix and also matches the genre. A really big disappointment to me however, is that the whole story is in text.

There is no voice with that. I get that it could be hard to get original Asterix & Obelix voice actors to do these lines. Maybe not wanting to change to new voices and ruin nostalgia is a good reason? But, quite a part of the players don’t know Asterix and Obelix at all and are new to these characters. Anyway, for me it was a miss. Besides that the game plays well and is enjoyable.
